Boy Kills World Review – Silence is Golden, and Violent
Witness an over the top tale of vengeance in Boy Kills World
With the excellent Monkey Man still in cinemas, I had to ask myself, was I really ready for another blood soaked action packed revenge movie? The answer was a resounding YES!
Now the first thing I’ll do is correct its category, this is not a crime thriller, this is an action comedy, in that despite its gratuitous violence, its not meant to be taken too seriously.
Boy Kills World is the feature directorial debut from Moritz Mohr. It stars Bill Skarsgard as a character simply named ‘Boy’. The film is set in a near future dystopian city ruled by the evil Van Der Roy family. They hold an annual ceremony known as ‘The Culling’ where those who speak out against their rule are publicly sacrificed to keep the rest of society in line.

Boy witnesses his whole family and beloved sister massacred. He has his tongue cut and ear drums burned, leaving him deaf and mute. He escapes and is raised and trained by an elusive Shaman, played by Yayan Ruhian, who martial arts fans might recognise from The Raid Movies. If all this isn’t sounding much like a comedy don’t worry, that part is coming

Now boy grows up mute and cant remember what his own voice sounds like, so he has to assign one to himself and chooses the voice of his favourite fighting game at the local arcade. This voice is played by comedian H. Jon Benjamin, who is known for his voice over work in shows like Bobs Burgers and as the voice of Sterling Archer in the show Archer.
This voice is his the inner monologue we hear through out the film as he tries to understand the world around him and stayed focused on his mission of revenge against the Van Der Roy family. As he cant actually communicate with anyone, all the conversations he has are with his dead sister which brings much of the levity to proceedings.

I had concerns over how well having a character who cant speak or hear would translate in this sort of film, where action stars are well known for thier one liners. But it works really well and leads to some funny scenes. One of my favourites is when they are making their revenge plan, Boy can’t read the lips of one of his team and ends up going into this big mission not quite sure what he’s supposed to be doing!
Boy Kills world feels like its been ripped straight off the pages of a comic book. Its ultra violent, over the top and great fun. I think the action cheroegrapher Dawid Szatarski who previously worked on films like Black Widow and Ong Bak 3 deserves a special mention. Martial arts fans will be impressed by how many styles he managed to work into the fight scenes here, with the final fight in particular being fantastically brilliant and brutal.
Boy Kills world wont be everyones cup of tea but these kind of movies rarely are. But this one delivers the same revenge story with such a personal identity, I think it just might be considered a cult classic in a few years. Yes it has a twist that most people will see coming but rather than being annoying, it feels strangely satisfying that you were right. if your looking for an ultra violent, frenetic furious and fun/funny movie with enough story to keep things moving along, then Boy Kills World should be what your looking for
