Sonic the Hedgehog’s big screen debut is shockingly splendid

Browsing the internet and I came across several articles proclaiming the new #SonictheHedgehog movie the most successful video game adaptation OF ALL TIME! I thought that can’t be right, can it really be that good?

So, I went to watch it with my 8yr old. Yes, it had a lot of cheesy moments, what do you expect, is based on a video game. But it was good, in fact it was better than that, it was incredibly good. It was funny, it was charming, it had jokes for both the adults and kids and some references that only the parents will get.

Almost 20yrs since Sonic was relevant in pop culture and there was genuine energy in the foyer afterwards. Kids from the ‘Fortnite’ generation were excited about what they had just seen. Paramount obviously knew they had a hit on their hands as the two-post credit scenes point directly towards the inevitable sequel. #JamesMarsden and #TikaSumpter do a good job as the supporting cast but the show was stolen by #JimCarrey. He took one of the blandest video game baddies and went ‘full Carrey’- total commitment and enjoyment, like his early days of the Mask and Ace Ventura.

If you were a Sonic fan growing up in the 90s, go see your childhood brought to life (remember that voice- SEGA). If you have kids even better. Take them, they will love it

Rating: 4 out of 5.

  1. I wasn’t even a Sonic fan in the day (sorry Mysteree!). However, I really enjoyed this!
Aside from Jim Carrey being brilliant as always, James Marsedn seemed to work really well for me as Sonic’s side kick. I laughed out loud at several silly moments, probably the bits aimed at the kids! But I think there is enough in it for kids and adults. A great bit of fun escapism!

What do you think?
