American Fiction is a satirical comedy/drama, written and directed by Cord Jefferson in his directorial debut. It takes a hilarious look at our obsession with defining people by stereotypes. Jeffrey Wright stars as Monk, a writer fed up with the offensive tropes labelled as ‘black entertainment’ he tries to hold a mirror up to this problem but invertedly ends up scoring his biggest literary success, leaving him as an accidental champion of the very problem he’s trying to shut down, somehow turning his American fiction into reality
