Ghosted Review: Big Stars in a Catastrophically Misfiring Mockbuster

ghosted

Ghosted is a spirited action rom com that doesn’t quite manage to deliver on excitement or chemistry

Ghosted, a romantic action comedy directed by Dexter Fletcher, and stars Chris Evans and Ana de Armas. I was initially excited to see this movie as I am a big fan of both actors and the movie’s trailer promised an interesting spin on the traditional romcom. However, despite my enthusiasm, ‘Ghosted’ ultimately fell short of my expectations.

The movie’s title refers to an all-too-common modern dating experience of being suddenly cut off and ignored by a romantic interest. It’s a concept that many viewers can relate to, and I was curious to see how it would be used in a romantic action-comedy setting.

While both Evans and de Armas are undeniably attractive, their chemistry felt off and lacked believability. Chris Evans is so well known as Captain America, the hero who doesn’t back down so it felt unrealistic for me to see him as firstly a character who needed rescuing and secondly, someone who would be ‘unlucky in love’.

As for de Armas, I was hoping to be blown away by her portrayal as an action star, especially since she’s set to star in the upcoming John Wick spinoff, Ballerina. I found her competent in her action scenes but a little underwhelmed.

The villains of Ghosted were also uninteresting and the underlying CIA plotline was dull and unengaging. Despite these shortcomings, Ghosted still had its positive moments. The film featured some very cool and unexpected cameos from some big-name actors, but I won’t spoil them here. The action scenes were also executed competently with some decent gunfights and car chases.

In conclusion, ‘Ghosted’ was a significant letdown for me. As a fan of both Evans and de Armas, I was expecting more from this movie. The lack of evident chemistry between the two leads, coupled with an uninteresting plot, made it hard to engage with the movie. While ‘Ghosted’ had one or two enjoyable moments, it wasn’t enough to save it from unfortunately falling flat.
