The Streaming Leader once again throws down the gauntlet with a diverse and delectable line up coming to Netflix in 2024
The Streaming Wars rage on and while many believed the introduction of the other services would disrupt the status quo, the reality has been quite different. Netflix continues to reign supreme as the king of streaming. While they may not be the first service that comes to mind when it comes to quality, Netflix have in the last year put out some incredible iconic shows as well as a few acclaimed movies.
They seem set to follow this trend into 2024 with their lastest preview showcase, featuring the return of some of their most successful series and movies featuring some of Hollywood’s biggest ‘A’ list actors and directors. Now we all know that big name actors don’t guarantee quality, infact sometimes it feels like they might just be there for a pay check!
While their slate is absolutely packed for 2024, here are five Movies and five shows I will personally be looking forward to this year. and hoping they are actually good!
My Netflix Movie Picks
- Atlas
Jennifer Lopez takes a break from wedding movies and delves into the sci-fi genre with ‘Atlas’. She plays an analyst with a deep distrust of A.I who is sent to retrieve a rogue A.I. Turns out the only way to save the day is to trust the artificial intelligence. It also stars Simu Liu, Sterling K. Brown and Mark Strong. Sounds a bit like like WIll Smiths ‘I Robot’ to me! I’m a big sci fi fan so hoping its decent.
- Back In Action
The title for this movie couldnt be more appropriate for its stars. This will be Jamie Foxx’s first film since his life threatening health scare and Cameron Diaz has come out of her self imposed retirement for this role. Jamie and Cameron play Emily and Matt, a couple of retired C.I.A agents forced back into action when their civilian life cover is blown. Cameron Diaz can tap into her action days from Charlie’s Angels and Jamie Foxx is a talent who can do it all so fingers crossed this comes together and sparks on screen
- Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F
In the 1980’s and early 90’s, Eddie Murphy was possibly the most talented and bankable comedic star in Hollywood. From his stand up specials to his hit movies, every film cemented his status and solidified the loyalty from his millions of fans, of which I am one. Fastforward 30yrs and while Eddie will always be the G.O.A.T, his movies dont quite carry the same weight. Producing sequels to his classics seems to be the path he’s currenty on.
Coming 2 America had mixed reviews but even if it were fantastic, it still wouldnt top the original Coming to America. I believe this Bevery Hills Cop sequel will follow the same path. BUT its Eddie Murphy….Back in Beverley Hills….with most of the original cast returning – how could we not watch it!?
- Damsel
Millie Bobby Brown is quite possibly the Netflix MVP right now. She hasn’t concerned herself with Hollywood big movie stardome and has instead made herself comfortably one of the queens of Netflix streaming.
She always delivers quality charming performances and while the action, swords and dragons of Damsel will be a new genre for her to tackle, theres no reason to believe this won’t be another hit. Leaving this young talent continuing to dominate Netflix in 2024. It also stars Ray Winstone, Nick Robinson, Shohreh Aghdashloo and Angela Bassett
- The Union
Mike (Mark Whalberg) and Roxanne (Halle Berry) were high school sweethearts who cross paths as adults. Mike is a regular construction worker but gets dragged into the world of spies and espionage by Roxanne who is a US Intelligent Agent. I’m really not sure about this but I’m a fan of Mr Wahlberg and of course I love Halle so I have to cross my fingers and give it a chance.

My Netflix TV Show Picks
- BLACK DOVES
Set in London at Christmas time, Keira Knightly stars in Black Doves as a loving mother, dedicated wife and professional spy, passing off information to the shadowy ‘Black Doves’ corperation. When her lover is assasinated, the organisation realise she is caught up in really dangerous web and send help. It also stars Ben Whishaw, Sarah Lancashire, Andrew Buchan, Andrew Koji
- THE GENTLEMEN
Guiy Ritchie doing what he does best, just on the small screen. A slick series about the British underworld with a great cast including Theo James, Kaya Scodelario, Daniel Ings, Joely Richardson, Vinnie Jones, and the great Giancarlo Esposito
- Rhythm and Flow season 2
As a big fan of rap and lyricists, the idea of a real hiphop talent show intrigued me but I was apprehensive and quietly cautious. The first season was released in 2019 and i totally loved it, i’ve been waiting since for the second season announcement. Im a bit dissapointed we are not getting the original judges back as T.I, Chance the Rapper and especially Cardi B really made the first season entertaining. Whether DJ Khaled, Ludacris and Latto can match up as judges remains to be seen but i’ll definately be watching.
- SUPACELL
Director Rapman follows up his cinematic success of ‘Blue Story’ with an intriguing sci fi series ‘Supacell’. Five ordinary Black South londoners with no apparent connection develop superpowers. Uncovering the mystery behind this phenominum could be really interesting. Its giving me ‘Heroes’ Season 1 kind of vibes. As long as the series is hanbdled right and maintaines quality, it could be a big streaming hit
- SQUID GAMES S2
The first season of Squid games was a worldwide smash hit for Netflix. Developing it into an actual reality tv game show with ‘Squid Games The Challenge’ was a stroke of genius- yes it didn’t feature actually killing but the drama and backstabbing was second to none. To some extent I actually preferred The Challenge and can’t wait for the second season of that spinoff show.
But for now we have the second season of the orginal show that started it all. Will it capture the imagination of the world like the first season? That remains to be seen but one thing for sure is we’ll all be watching Squid Games Season 2 on Netflix in 2024.
