Superman: 5 Things I Really Enjoyed and 5 I Didn’t
Is Superman the Saviour of the DCU?
They say comparison is the thief of joy, and having been a Superman fan for 30+ years and seen every Superman film, I vowed to keep the X-ray vision to a minimum and to view Superman 2025 with hope and in pursuit of happiness.

James Gunn delivered a version of Superman that was fun, comedic and wacky, just as you’d expect from the director of Suicide Squad and Guardians of the Galaxy. It felt at times like I was in the mind of a kid as they were reading a comic and imagining the characters coming to life. Viewing the film from that lens was not only wholesome but opened up portholes of opportunity and possibility.

I think his style is a dopamine seeker’s dream – he connects with new generations and their need for constant stimulation, and while it’s a little too much for me, if it means the love for Kal-El will live on for generations to come, I’m all for it. Lex, being a secret gamer, was one of the highlights of the movie for me.

Gunn didn’t stray from the core values of Superman, and the film continues to ensure that our favourite
Immigrant Alien remained a socialist, fighting injustice and standing up to fascism and dictatorship.
Considering who and why Superman was created way back in 1938, I find the recent political discourse
around this film ironic. People suggesting Superman should stay out of politics must be unfamiliar with the Man of Steel.

And I’m glad Gunn didn’t miss a beat, making the film a conduit for truth-telling. He dares the viewer to try to separate the fiction from reality with a tense scene where a sniper points a gun at a young child. The depiction of the president of Barovia as a billionaire’s puppet was a little too comedic for me, but I can see how his mockery rings true.

Overall, a great movie, that is inclusive, diverse and gives us hope for a better tomorrow! The saviour of the DCU? It could well be!
